Review: Fire Keeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley, Narrated by Isabella Star LaBlanc

This was the first audiobook I've listened to in a long time. Honestly, I didn't have high hopes. My hearing has significantly decreased in the past few years and my verbal comprehension has always been something of a mess. I often found myself unable to enjoy audiobooks and podcasts for long periods of time because I could not follow the information. However, I've been listening to things a lot more and decided that this would be nice to give a try during my walks around campus.

My mother downloaded the book so I didn't even have to do much to access it. I clicked and began listening. Angeline Boulley based the book on her own experience as a biracial woman. She has been very active in her native community.

Fire Keeper's Daughter has an incredible opening scene. It immediately sucked me into the book. I was invested, eager to know what would happen to the young woman whose life it surrounds. The woman the story follows is named Daunis and she has a white mother and a native father. Her birth is a complicated one that leads to her not being enrolled in her tribe. The book shows the community that Daunis has in her tribe. The familial bonds she holds. It's very intriguing and personal.

Daunis goes undercover for the FBI in order to investigate the infiltration of meth in her community. As she looks for answers, she finds herself learning more about her culture and how to be independent.

Isabella Star LaBlanc is a wonderful narrator and has the perfect voice for Daunis. I enjoyed listening to this in my car on the way home from work,  If you're looking for a new audiobook or book, I highly recommend reading it. I will say there are various content warnings to be aware of before reading this book. This contains death, drug abuse, kidnapping, gun violence, suicide, drug overdose, sports injuries, gore, drug use, drug sales, racism, and more. I recommend looking at StoryGraph for a full list.

As always happy reading and stay safe.

Side note: I am hoping to be posting more frequently, but due to my work schedule my ability to read has decreased. I will try to read at least two books a month and update them here.
