Review: Lies We Bury by Elle Marr Narrated by Kate Rudd

I honestly had forgotten I downloaded this book on Kindle Unlimited and assumed my mom picked it when I finished the book I was listening to before it.

This book is about a woman who grew up in captivity. Her mother and two other women were abducted by a man and kept in his basement. He forced those women to bear his children and they could not escape until the girls were about seven. Each survivor dealt with the trauma differently, but this particular sister is determined to have done so the best, although it's pretty clear she is not well.

As the nearing of her father and captor's release from prison nears, someone begins leaving her notes that are clues to a series of murders. She tries to figure them out but mostly ends up being the one taking photos of the crimes and profiting off them. As she becomes more wrapped up in the crimes, she is forced to dig deeper into her time in the basement to use clues from her childhood to solve the murders.

This is an interesting story of perseverance, what trauma does to a person, mystery, and family. I thoroughly enjoyed the content of the story. I will also say that Kate Rudd did an excellent job narrating and that really added to my enjoyment of the work.

I highly recommend checking this book out if you are able. It should still be available on Kindle Unlimited if you have that. Also, content warnings of self-harm, rape, child abuse, kidnapping, murder, gore, descriptions of death, and more. As always check out StoryGraph for a full list of content warnings as noted by other readers. Happy reading.
